Between 12:00 p.m. 12:10 p.m. Northern Belgium was struck by four terrorists attacks.
The first attack took place in Kortrijk at noon. Initial reports indicate three people were killed0 including one of the attackers. The number of people injured is not yet known.
The second took place in in Ghent at 12:03 p.m. Several people were shot and injured by two gunmen of Middle Eastern descent. Police killed the two attackers.
Leuven was the site of the third attack at 12:06 p.m. with one dying in a suicide bombing.
A fourth attack was carried out in Antwerp at 12:10 p.m. It is not yet known how many people were injured and if there were any deaths. Police are searching for two suspects of Middle Eastern descent.
It is not yet known if the attacks are co-ordinates and there has not been any claims of responsibility made.
The Belgian government released a statement following the attacks.
“The Kingdom of Belgium is currently investigating the origins of all four attacks. We are dedicated to strengthening the security of our people during this trying time and are taking steps to improve security measures within our borders and with our neighbors.
“These attacks have been on not only our citizenry, but our unity as well. These terrorists do not want to see a united Belgium. We ask that our people continue to live resiliently, and continue to demonstrate true Belgian pride.”
