Amid conflict at the China-Myanmar border, confusion surrounds the context of the situation.
On Nov. 1 reports of violence on the border between Myanmar and China surfaced, stating that the Kachin Independence Army opened fire on Chinese forces patrolling the border with Myanmar. While in pursuit, two companies of PLA soldiers crossed into Myanmar. Moderate casualties on both sides were reported.
Exactly what happened is unclear. The accounts from the NLD and China differ. China claims they responded to a “vicious, unprovoked attack upon Chinese forces within China’s territorial borders” by engaging terrorists who retreated across the border.
“It is the government’s responsibility to protect its citizens,” China’s release said.
India and the NLD have both released statements condemning the violation of the border incursion by external military forces and are concerned with the escalation of events in Burma.
