Aung San Suu Kyi to speak to protestors in capital

Yangon, Burma – Aung San Suu Kyi will be speaking to protestors in the capital to call for a return to peace after some previously peaceful protests turned violent in Yangon over the weekend.  This violence, while unacceptable to the leaders of the NLD, demonstrates the dire need of a solution to this crisis.  We are doing everything within our power to calm and deescalate the situation before it expands. We would like reiterate that the NLD is a peaceful movement and has consistently pushed peaceful protests throughout the capital and Yangon.  The actions of this small minority of pro-democracy protestors should not be seen as indicative of the NLD party.  The government of Burma, of which the NLD is a partner, should focus on security of all of Burma, and the military-imposed martial law is counter-productive to that security.  Only after the people of Burma are freed from martial law allowed free and fair elections can security and stability return to Burma.
