Mexican president releases statement on Acapulco attacks

The president of Mexico, Felipe de Jesús Calderón Hinojosa, has released a statement regarding the attacks in Acapulco Friday around 10 a.m. Pacific time.

The eyes of the world are today focused on Mexico.

Felipe de Jesús Calderón Hinojosa

We know from our experience in Guerrero over the past three years that there are limits to what cann be done to prevent violence — the 2009 gun battle with the cartel there made that clear.  Nevertheless, I believe that it is important that we increase the visible security presence in the resort areas and you should coordinate activities with the police.  We
cannot afford a renewed drop in tourism like that which accompanied reports of the beheadings in Acapulco.

Finally, you must underscore in any public statements our solidarity with our brothers to the North who have suffered today as well.  These
incidents only reinforce the correctness of the efforts that we have initiated together in Merida.

Felipe de Jesús Calderón Hinojosa

Presidente de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos
