Two powerful members of the Kim Jong Il family were under house arrest with the late leader’s son.
The military and intelligence officers who overthrew Kim Jung Un and placed him under house arrest have also detained his aunt and uncle, Kim Kyong Hui and Jang Song Taek. Kim Kyong Hui was elevated to the rank of army general and a member of the Workers’ Party Political Bureau. Her husband had been considered Kim Jung Il’s second in command.
Following Kim Jong Il’s death, Kim Jung Un was said to have succeeded his father, yet hours later he was under house arrest.
North Korean officials say Kim Kyong Hui and Jang Song Taek were placed under house arrest for their own safety.
