President Barack Obama is calling for ceasefire, breaking his silence on the burgeoning Middle East conflict sparked by a midday air raid on alleged nuclear facilities in Iran.
In a 5:20 p.m. news conference, he called for multilateral negotiation to be started between Iran and Israel. After Israeli jets bombed areas in Shiraz, Qom, Arak, Natanz and Yazd, Iranians fired a ballistic missile, hitting the Ramat David air base. Also, Hezbollah, long linked with Iran, has retaliated, firing multiple rocket volleys into Northern Israel near Lebanon.
The main goal, Obama said, is to protect American troops who are still in the middle east. Obama said though, that the U.S. would not back away from anyone who threatened U.S. military force.
